Fourteen people have died in a cholera epidemic that has suddenly hit the Eastern Cape.

The Sunday Times has learned that 1,000 villagers from the O R Tambo and Chris Hani districts have been admitted to local clinics with cholera in the last week.

Minister of Water Affairs Ronnie Kasrils and three other cabinet ministers flew to the region this week to lead a crisis intervention to fight the disease. A joint task team of officials from the Water Affairs and Health departments, the defence force and local authorities has been established to stem the epidemic.
