Since space travel first became possible, science fiction writers and scientists have imagined what it would take to modify the atmospheres and biospheres of other worlds so that humans could live on them without cumbersome equipment. This process of remaking moons or planets is referred to as terraforming. In our solar system, Mars appears the most likely candidate for terraforming. Under some proposals, terraforming (which would take several centuries to complete) might begin as soon as people land on the red planet.
