My first impression of Marin Alsop's interpretation of Tchaikovsky's every-popular Fourth Symphony was not entirely favorable. The first movement seemed lax, if not entirely leaden. Transitions didn't seem to have much continuity and nothing seemed to have much zip. This impression was not helped by Naxos's close, mid bass-heavy sound that made it all appear that much more ponderous. However, by the time the two final movements rolled around, Ms. Alsop was hitting her stride, and the symphony reached its customary fiery levels of excitement.
I don't know. Maybe by her starting more slowly than I'm used to, she intensified the overall effect. However, for comparison I put on Bernard Haitink's 1978 Philips recording and found it preferable in almost all respects. Not only was the performance crisper and more pointed, the sound was better focused as well. Add that the Concertgebouw Orchestra made the Colorado Symphony sound ...
