Beware of comparisons. When I first put this disc on and had listened for a couple of minutes, I was mightily impressed. The sound, the sensuous performance, all top flight. Then I began noticing that Maestro Gergiev seemed to be lingering unduly in all three of the first movements, and by the time of the finale, he seemed to be rushing to get it over.
So, I put on the 40-year-old Reiner recording with the Chicago Symphony, newly remastered by JVC in a special audiophile series, and found it sounded clearer, cleaner, tighter, better focused, and more wide ranging.
