Wouldn't you know it? Just when you find a disc that makes a terrific impression sonically, you have to cope with an eccentric interpretation. Oh, well, I suppose we can't have everything.

Let me start with the good news. This recording, made in 1999, is among the best, most natural-sounding presentations I've heard in years. The piano concerto, especially, is remarkable because not only does the orchestra sound realistic but the piano tone as well, the notes ringing out clearly as though the instrument were in the listener's own room. The frequency range is not particularly wide, as this is Mozart, after all, but the acoustic moment is well captured, broadly spread out, and warmly projected. ...
