Heck, they don't call us the "$ensible" Sound for nothing: Here's a clear case of bargain upon bargain. DG give us almost four hours of music on a three-disc mid-price set that beats most of the competition interpretively as well as financially. How can you beat that?
The two highlights of the collection are the Fireworks and Water Music. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, playing without benefit of conductor as usual, present a reading that is as lively as any period-instruments' performance, yet as smooth as any modern-instruments' realization you can name. The group is never flamboyant, but they combine energy and enthusiasm with meticulous execution. Tempos are well judged, never too fast or too slow, articulation is polished and refined, and the spirit of Handel is always well served.
