A statue of colonial monarch King George VI could be dethroned by a monument to Chinese revolutionary Sun Yat-sen in the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens.

The chairman of the Central and Western District Council, Wu Chor-nam, wants to move the statue of the monarch from its prime position in the heart of the park and replace it with one of Dr Sun.

Under a proposal to be debated by the council today, the statue of King George VI would be shifted to a vacant area of the zoological section of the park.
