In his inaugural address as president of the NCAA at its annual conference in January, Miles Brand said the group would "move forward in fully implementing Title IX in a timely and aggressive manner, despite the discomfort of some individuals or institutions."
Brand said he believes women and men should have equal opportunities in athletics, and "everyone who wants to participate has the opportunity to do so... No one should be left out because of gender." Colleges should be more creative in using their resources, and weakening Title IX is not the answer to schools' financial problems.
"I'm prepared to speak out strongly if Title IX is set back," The NCAA News reported in its January 6, 2003 issue. Although everyone doesn't agree with his position, presidents of universities do agree, Brand said, based on his experience as president of Indiana University.
