Letters to the editor Sir, - This refers to Dr RK Dasgupta's two part article (2-3 January) wherein the author shows with his erudite analysis the contribution of English language in the growth and development of vernacular literatures. In endorsement of the author's view I would like to add that against the overwhelming influence of Tagore in Bengali literature during the 1930s and 1940s some English educated poets wrote profusely leading to a new Bengali poetic movement free from Tagore's influence. That period is known as "Kallol age" which was spearheaded by young talents mainly through three Bengali magazines, "Kallol", "Kalikalam" and "Kavita Patrika".
