The mayor of Guangzhou called on Hong Kong yesterday not to stand in the way of his city's development, particularly its plans for the Nansha port, saying co-operation would lead to mutual gains and a "win-win" situation.

But Lin Shusen denied there was a rift between the two and hit out at the Hong Kong media for "making out we are at each other's throats".
