WHEN I was very little, I was taken to the movies to see Jaws. It was scary but fun. In fact, it was so memorable that I had a selection of great white sharks in my toys collection.
And seeing how I liked the monsters so much, my father took me to the bookstore one day and bought me a Jaws novel. Two things surprised me. One, I was surprised that he would buy me something so heavy reading, as I was only eight years old, then. Two, I thought it strange that anyone would publish a Jaws novel when the movie was so much more fun and vivid.
Well, as I grew older, I came to understand that my now-late father wanted to share the joy of English literary works with me but needed to start me on something that I could handle. Lo and behold, he bought me a book which he thought could get me started - Jaws.
