2. Several thousand people went down to the streets in Cap-Haitien on Saturday, 8 February, within the framework of the "Weekend of Hope." Demonstrators demanded the departure of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The demonstration ended in violence when government supporters allegedly hurled stones and broken bottles at the demonstrators. Several demonstrators were injured before the police broke up the demonstration because the demonstrators allegedly did not respect the previously announced itinerary. Frandley Denis Lulien, leader of Citizens Initiative, ICI, makes official comments. He says he is pleased with the large number of people who participated in the demonstration and rejects the police thesis that the itinerary was not respected. (4 …
