The staff equity situation at the University of SA, especially gender equity, was embarrassing, new Unisa council chairwoman Dr Anna Mokgokong said on Thursday. "The 2002 senior academic staff profiles leave much to be desired," she told staff and students in Pretoria at the opening of the university's academic year. The racial figures spoke for themselves, Mokgokong said. Out of 150 professors, only seven were black, and of the 146 associate professors all but 16 were white. There were four black heads of department in administration, compared to 13 white ones. Only 11 of the 58 heads of academic departments were black. …
