: Shortly after he became director last April of the premier Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) at Pusa, a couple of beaming doctoral students brought him sweets, recounts S Nagarajan.

"Thank you, what's the reason?" he asked. "We've just got into the civil services," they told him.

A displeased Nagarajan asked them why they had taken admission into IARI if the civil services was their aim. But they were not the only ones. Last year, as many as 36 IARI alumni made it to the various services, eight even joining the foreign service.
