Legislator Chou Po-lun of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) resigned from his post yesterday, a day after the Supreme Court turned down his appeal on his six-year prison term in connection with a 15-year-old corruption case.

Chou, who is reputed to be one of the cleverest politicians in the ruling party, issued a three-point statement early in the morning, saying that he would immediately resign from his legislative post, voluntarily go to jail and retain a lawyer to apply for an extraordinary appeal.
