Students will better enjoy math and science learning and may get a better understanding of the subjects with the help of a software system, according to teachers and its developer.
Using the Web Assign Internet-based software, teachers can assign students homework problems that they have multiple opportunities to submit the correct answer. The software has a huge database and randomly assigns problems so each student gets a different homework assignment.
"Most time we give kids more than one try [at the answer]," said David Corsetti, an Algebra I teacher at Broughton High School (N.C.). "The alternative would be for them to take out a sheet of paper, do the problems and have no idea if they were right or wrong. This way, if they find out they get half of them wrong, they take another try."
That's the exact idea of the software, said John Risley, a North Carolina State University professor who designed the software. "What happens on written homework? They copy one another's homework and turn it in to get a grade," Risley told ETN. "Even though an instructor may spend time writing on that homework, students don't read it, or they get the answers back a week later and it's not very instructive."
