ITEM: "Germany will not give a single euro to any war effort in Iraq, its finance minister has declared," reported CNN on December 23rd. "Hans Eichel said Germany's weak economy could not cope with providing any financial assistance to a U.S. strike on Iraq."

CORRECTION: Germany wasn't so shy about providing aid that would favor Iraq's military -- a significant point omitted in the above account. A leaked list of foreign companies that have helped Baghdad appeared a few days earlier in the Berlin-based Die Tageszeitung. Of the 150 or so firms listed, more than half were German. All were used by Iraq, noted the Financial Times, "to develop missiles or nuclear, biological and chemical weapons."
