At about 3 p.m. on December 12, 2002, a man bent on robbing a Subway sandwich shop in South Memphis, Tennessee, stood in line and purchased a sandwich before pointing what appeared to be a gun at store owner Roosevelt Johnson Jr. The thug then grabbed cash from the register and fled.

Johnson, 49, grabbed his own gun and followed in an attempt to apprehend and detain the thief until police arrived. When it appeared that Melvin O.
