Canarsie, New York, resident Ronald Dixon, 27, is a computer analyst and Navy veteran. Shortly before 8 a.m. on December 14, 2002, a loud noise awakened him. Glancing at his bedroom mirror, he saw the an intruder's reflection in a hallway near the bedroom where the Dixons' 18-month-old son was sleeping. While his wife called 911, Mr. Dixon grabbed a 9-mm pistol from his closet and confronted the miscreant, who was by then rummaging through drawers in the child's room. Asked what he was doing, the man sought to frighten Dixon by falsely claiming that an accomplice was searching for valuables elsewhere in the house. And when the burglar then made a move toward Dixon, the homeowner shot him twice.
