Exceptionally handsome actors may become semi-passive narcissists (Tyrone Power, the young Richard Gere) or bashful charmers (Gary Cooper, Robert Redford). Or they may become strategic hipsters, exploiting their looks while maintaining a core of reserve, even of mystery (Cary Grant, Paul Newman). And some actors, like Laurence Olivier and Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift, may transcend all categories and distinctions and re-create the art of film acting from the beginning.
