(From Network Computing Asian Edition)
Byline: Dario Forte
I recently got the chance to test the WatchGuard Firebox III 2500, an appliance that comes with its own setup and management software that can be installed on any network machine. It is specifically designed for medium-sized enterprises that need both firewall and VPN services to external branches, or to give mobile users secure access to the company network.
Three things stood out in the Firebox III 2500: its firewall engine, which has traffic monitoring and Web filtering features; a VPN that is fast and easy to configure; and secure remote management and logging that can be performed from any network terminal.
Centralised management
A key advantage of the Firebox is being able to monitor and manage many firebox appliances from one terminal, for example the security manager?s notebook or workstation.
This is done with the Firebox?s setup and control software, which I installed on a Fujitsu Siemens notebook with Microsoft Windows 98 for this review. Note that it doesn?t need a very powerful machine to handle enterprise-wide firebox management and setup.
