There are two reasons why Microsoft decided to use the open source Kerberos authentication scheme. Firstly, Kerberos provides a strong and tested design for network authentication and has features that Microsoft needed to make its new networked applications more secure. Secondly, Kerberos also allows for vendor-based extensions for authorisations, which Microsoft has found particularly useful.
