About three years ago, I was involved with a few integration works for regional service providers that involved integration between TDM switches and VoIP access gateways via T1/E1 trunks. This simple setup works well for various voice services, such as prepaid, postpaid, or toll bypass. The switches terminate the T1/E1 channels plus the SS7 links. In addition, they determine the call type attributes from various inbound and SS7 channels, perform call pre-processing, process the call information, and routing it to the respective outbound channels.
