There is much potential for smart cards to become the platform for maintaining the privacy and security of online identities. Speaking at the Gemplus Developer Conference at Singapore last November, Jim Schreckengast, senior vice-president, R&D Strategy, Gemplus, said that although technology developments are enriching our lives with innovative devices, richer content and continuous connectivity, they are also increasing security risks.
Information theft, identity theft, abuse of systems and the emergence of an increasingly hostile environment require users to be vigilant, added Schreckengast. But one cannot be vigilant all the time.
