MANILA, Feb 4 Asia Pulse - The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) has moved to fast-track the construction of the P6.2 billion (US$115 million) New Iloilo Airport.
DOTC Secretary Leonardo Mendoza said the modernization, expansion and construction of airports nationwide is necessary in order to widen and proliferate air transportation services as major factor in the development of the country.
Mendoza said a pre-bid conference on the project was held last January 15. Attendees were the pre-qualified Japanese contractor, consultants, officials of the DOTC and the provincial and municipal led by Governor Niel Tupas.
Also present were representatives of the business sector and non-government organization (NGOs).
Mendoza had earlier directed that the bidding process be "fully transparent."
He also instructed the DOTC bids and awards committee to conclude the bidding not later than March 28, 2003, as per schedule and the work to commence immediately after that day.
Senate President Franklin Drilon, a native of Iloilo, played a key role in the realization of the project as he sits as chairman of the New Iloilo Airport steering committee.
