ROXAS CITY, Feb 4 Asia Pulse - The national government is establishing a national road and roll-on/roll-off network that should improve maritime transport throughout the Philippine archipelago.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said this on her second visit to this city where she assured Capicenos that Capiz is now part of the national nautical highway system with its newly completed RO-RO facilities.
The President inspected the facilities which are part of the P181 million (US$3.36 million) expansion project of Culasi Port here that also included the reclamation of almost a hectare of the sea area, construction of concrete sheet pile wall, breakwater upgrading and installation of port lights.
In her speech, which was interrupted many times by enthusiastic applause from a crowd composed of local government and barangay officials, vendors, women, government employees and other sectoral representatives, the President said the national nautical system would connect ports and land highways from Mindanao to Luzon through a network of RO-RO ports.
In effect, this would bring down cargo costs and passenger fares, according to her.
In particular, the President said the presence of improved facilities at Culasi Port, including its own RO-RO facility would create more jobs, as well as augur well for tourism and the fishing industry for which Capiz has earned the monicker as the seafood capital ...
