- John Howard will meet UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, US President George W Bush, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri in an international diplomatic blitz to press Australia's case for united action to disarm Iraq; Iraqi President Saddam hussein has warned Australian soldiers they will suffer "horrible casualties" if they join the US in invading his country; Six detainees escaped federal custody yesterday after an orchestrated abd violent breakout from the Woomera detention centre; Almost six out of 10 Australians would support a war against Iraq with UN backing but an overwhelming majority oppose unilateral military action.
