Thousands of Americans living and working in Saudi Arabia were advised by the US embassy here to consider leaving in light of increased risks as war on Iraq looms large.
"Private American citizens currently in Saudi Arabia should evaluate rigorously their own security situations and should consider departing," a new warden message released by the embassy Saturday said.
The US Department of State has authorized the departure of family members of employees of the embassy and consulates in Jeddah, on the Red Sea, and Dharan, on the Gulf coast, on a voluntary basis, the message added.
It warned Americans that due to the Muslim Hajj pilgrimage which starts next week and school holidays in Saudi Arabia, the availability of flights will be greatly decreased.
