Beijing residents spent the first day of the lunar in temples and at a fair, after welcoming in the Year of the Goat at special dinners or just in front of the television.

Three-quarters of China's population spent the last hours of the Year of the Horse watching a special New Year programme on state-run television station CCTV, the broadcaster said on its website.

The Spring Festival eve special from about 8:00 pm until after midnight drew 75 percent of Chinese families, CCTV said Saturday.

If CCTV's claims are correct, it would have registered a huge viewership given China's 1.3 billion population.

The programme alternated between songs and skits with the themes of patriotism, family and love, and presenters were eager to make frequent references to the "glory of the Chinese nation".
