Temples teemed with thousands of superstitious Hong Kong residents as they marked the new Year of the Goat with prayers for a resolution to the city's economic woes.
Thousands of people poured into the famous Wong Tai Sin Temple as soon as the doors swung open on the stroke of midnight Saturday, vying to be first to offer prayers to a Taoist deity believed to symbolise good luck.
"World peace and I hope Hong Kong people can make more money were my prays," one middle-aged man said after battling through the heaving masses to offer his bundles of joss sticks.
"I prayed for good health... and no more wage cuts for workers," his female companion chirped in.
Thousands of people also lined the streets of waterfront Wanchai to watch a colourful New Year parade which featured some 12 floats and 37 groups of performers from home and abroad.
The procession was however smaller than last year's, when 22 floats and 39 performers participated, a possible sign of further belt-tightening in readiness for another tough year financially.
