The US ambassador to India offended his hosts by flouting protocol during the annual Republic Day celebrations, a newspaper said.
The Hindustan Times, quoting foreign ministry sources, said Robert Blackwill left a function hosted by President Abdul Kalam for the national holiday January 26 before India's national anthem was played.
The invitation had said all guests needed to stay until the playing of the anthem and the departure of the president and his guest of honour -- this year Iranian President Mohammad Khatami.
"All ambassadors have to adhere to the protocol norms," an official was quoted saying. "Ambassador Blackwill did not do so."
