Six-time major winner Nick Faldo was tantalisingly close to his first tournament victory in almost six years as he wound back the clock to lead the Heineken Classic.
The 45-year-old rated England's greatest-ever golfer fired a seven-under 65 to take a one-shot lead Saturday on 11-under 205 over Australian Peter Lonard (67-72-67), halfway leader Englishman Paul Casey (65-67-74) and Sweden's Niclas Fasth (68-70-68) heading into Sunday's final 18 holes.
Faldo, the three-time winner of both the British Open and US Masters, has not won since the 1997 Nissan Open in Los Angeles and he was excited about his chances of proving that "there's still plenty of the old Faldo in me."
He rated his faultless round of five birdies 10 out of 10. "For me at my age, 11 actually. All my intentions were there. My commitment was really good. It was the best I've committed to what I was doing for a long time."
Defending champion Ernie Els moved into contention, just three shots behind Faldo in joint seventh, after firing a much-improved six-under 66.
