Indian border guards detained 213 Bangladeshis who were trying to sneak into India's West Bengal state, an official said.
"The border guards have detained 213 Bangladeshi nationals, including 65 women and 18 children, while they were trying to get into Mathabhanga village in Coochbehar district," P.P. Gupta, a senior officer of the Border Security Force (BSF), said.
Coochbehar is 650 kilometres (403 miles) north of Calcutta, capital of West Bengal state.
"All of them are Hindus and were living near Bangladesh capital Dhaka," Gupta added.
"During interrogation, they said they had been forced by the Bangladesh government to cross the border," he added.
"When Indian border guards tried to push the Bangladeshis back to their countries, the Bangladesh Rifles' men opposed the action. Tension is high in the border outpost in the area. The Bangladehis nationals are stranded near the India-Bangladesh border."
