Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra declared the start of a three-month intensified war against drugs and announced a huge increase in the ceiling of rewards offered to those helping in trampling them out.
"Today is the first day that we declare war on drugs. I ask all government officials to fully cooperate," he said, pledging to protect them in their fight during his weekly radio address Saturday.
"I have warned government officials to work hard during these three months, and asked them to shoulder one hundred percent responsiblity."
The campaign is in particular targetting methamphetamines. Addiction to "yaa baa", or "crazy pills", as they are commonly known, has reached alarming levels among Thais.
