President Gloria Arroyo urged Filipinos in the Middle East to be ready for evacuation in the event war broke out in Iraq.
Arroyo said Saturday she would look into the conditions of the Filipinos when she makes a brief visit to Kuwait probably on Sunday.
The trip was only announced on Friday.
"I am going to meet with (the Kuwaiti) leader, the emir and inspect the conditions of the Filipino workers there," Arroyo said in a weekly radio address.
"We can only make sure that Filipinos in nearby countries are protected and our supply of oil is ensured," she said.
Arroyo said the government was ready to "provide selected and voluntary relocation and/or evacuation," to the estimated 1.4 million Filipinos working in the Middle East, adding that embassies in the region were in "the highest state of preparedness."
