Twenty-eight Pakistani nationals were arrested in the Italian city of Naples with explosives and a map of the town where NATO's southern headquarters are located, court sources said.
US naval forces ratcheted up protective measures Friday around their bases in Italy, a military spokesman said without confirming whether the heightened security was triggered by the mens' arrests.
Police said the 28 detainees, arrested in the southern Italian port on Thursday during an anti-narcotics sweep, were part of a terrorist "sleeper cell" that was planning an attack. They did not give further details on the group's plan.
But they said the detainees had detonators in their apartment, as well as a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of unidentified explosives. They were also carring a number of maps, including one for the town of Bagnoli, outside Naples, where the NATO southern headquarters is ...
