Thailand said it would consider an offer by Cambodia to send its foreign minister here in a bid to mend ties between the two countries sent plummeting by anti-Thai riots in Phnom Penh this week.
"The Cambodian government has offered to send its foreign minister to meet with me and is seeking a royal audience with King Bhumibol Adulyadej to explain the situation," Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said in his weekly radio address Saturday.
"I and our foreign ministry are considering the offer," he said.
The riots on Wednesday night were sparked by an erroneous report which quoted a Thai actress saying that Cambodia had stolen its cultural icon Angkor Wat from Thailand.
But Thaksin blamed the protests, which left one Cambodian dead and eight Thais injured, on domestic forces within Cambodia.
"The incident was caused by competition between political parties in Cambodia, who took advantage of a nonsensical story to fan out nationalist sentiment for political gain," he said.
