US President George W. Bush said he might welcome a new UN resolution on Iraq, after meeting British Prime Minister Tony Blair to plan the next steps in the campaign to disarm Saddam Hussein.
But he warned that "any attempt to drag the process on for months will be resisted by the United States," and he reiterated his view that a UN disarmament ultimatum made in November authorizes him to use force.
"Should the United Nations decide to pass a second resolution, it would be welcome if it is yet another signal that we're intent upon disarming Saddam Hussein," Bush told a White House press conference with Blair.
But the US president emphasised that his patience is running out in the diplomatic confrontation.
"Saddam Hussein is not disarming, he is a danger to the world, he must disarm and that is why I have constantly said and the prime minister has constantly said this issue will come to a head in a matter of weeks not months," Bush told a press conference.
He added that UN resolution 1441 "gives us the authority to move without any second resolution." The UN motion adopted on November 8 warns of "serious consequences" if Iraq fails to disarm.
