Three employees at the US consulate in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico have been arrested and charged with visa fraud, the Justice Department said.
The arrests took place, a day after the State Department took the unusual step of closing down the consulate to look into allegations that visas were being sold illegally there, the Justice Department said.
The employees, all Mexican citizens, are accused of conspiring to sell visas and border crossing cards, and were taken into detention by agents from the State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security, the Justice Department said.
