Wall Street's expected rebound failed to materialise at the open as a dismal forecast from Applied Materials and continued worries about a war with Iraq took centre stage.

Ten minutes into trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 17.00 at 7,928.13 and the S&P 500 index fell 3.18 to 841.43. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite shed 12.70, or 1 per cent, to 1,309.65.

The Dow on Thursday closed below 8,000 for the second time this week and is off more than 2 per cent for the week.
