David Howell had to think long and hard when he was offered the job of finance director at e-retailer Lastminute.com in the summer of 2001. Not only had the company's share price taken a severe beating after the dotcom collapse, but online retailing had traditionally been a young man's game and Howell was already the wrong side of 50. He is also not the sort of finance director who would readily change his suit and tie for a pair of chinos.
