HANOI, Jan 2 Asia Pulse - Exports of footwear in 2002 fetched up to US$1.83 billion, registering a 17.2 per cent year-on-year increase, according to the General Statistics Office.
With the rise, footwear continued to be one of the country's key export lines, together with crude oil, garments and seafood.
The European Union, the biggest market for Vietnamese footwear, accounted for 78 per cent of the total, while the U.S. increased to 10.3 per cent from 6.9 per cent in 2001.
Footwear exports to Japan and other countries decreased slightly.
In its development strategy till 2010, the shoe and leather sector will focus its investment on tanning projects to help tanneries and shoe makers reduce imports of raw materials from the present 80 per cent of their inputs.
