TAIPEI, Jan 2 Asia Pulse - Industrial leaders on Wednesday were positive about President Chen Shui-bian's promotion of direct transportation links with mainland China in his new year's speech and expressed the hope that the links would be a reality soon.
President Chen said that consultations and the promotion of direct transportation links, as well as exchanges on other relevant economic issues, could constitute a first step forward and set the stage for further economic and cultural interaction with the mainland.
Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association President Hsu Sheng-fa noted that pushing for cross-strait transportation links was one of the major consensuses reached in a major economic conference in 2001, but both sides of the Taiwan Strait had not been able to begin discussions on the matter because of the changing political environment.
