SEOUL, Jan 2 Asia Pulse - Korea posted a trade surplus of US$10.8 billion in 2002 by exporting US$162.82 billion worth of goods, up 8.2 per cent from a year ago, and importing US$152.02 billion worth, up 7.7 per cent, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said in a provisional tally on a customs clearance basis.
The black figure fell short of an earlier expectation of US$11 billion, but attained a goal of US$10 billion. In December alone, the nation's exports and imports posted US$15-17 billion, up 27.3 per cent year-on-year, and US$14.46 billion, up 28 per cent.
In particular, the import figure was a new monthly record, breaking the previous record high of US$14.21 billion in March 2000. Major export items were semiconductors, automobiles, wireless communications equipment and computers.
