Squinting at a VHF-radio to see what channel is being displayed--while the boat is corkscrewing across the face of a wave--is at best a disconcerting hassle and at worst a real threat. But squinting is not something you'll be doing with Icom's new IC-M602 digital selective calling VHF radio.
The radio has a large screen with extra-large type, says Jeanna Kunath, sales and marketing assistant with Icom. The M602's 4" x 8" front allows the necessary space for the easy-to-read-display.
In fact, if you are familiar with Icom's IC-M802 single-sideband radio, you'll notice that the face of the VHF radio is laid out identically to the single sideband. That includes having a full keypad, instead of the knobs and single buttons on the previous Icom VHF radios.
The benefit of the full keypad is that it's much easier and quicker to direct dial. "The single sidebands have had these for years, but not a VHF," Kunath says.
Besides channels, the LCD screen will also display your position when the M602 is interfaced with a GPS receiver.
