In "Unmentionable Vice Goes Mainstream," Mr. William Norman Grigg states that the Matthew Shepard robbery-murder "had no demonstrated connection to Shepard's lifestyle" (THE NEW AMERICAN, November 18,2002). However, according to the Denver Post in an article printed on October 11, 1998, Shepard's killers, Aaron James McKinney and Russell Arthur Henderson, "targeted him [Shepard] because he flirted with one of them at a bar.... McKinney, 22, was embarrassed that Shepard made two passes at him in front of his friends Tuesday night at the Fireside bar, the father [Bill McKinney] and girlfriend [Kristen Price] of a suspect [McKinney] said Saturday [October 10, 1998]."
It seems clear that Shepard's homosexual overture to McKinney was at the very least the impetus of the robbery and very likely the motivation for the subsequent murder.

William Norman Grigg responds: I overstated my point in the article. The brutal murder of Matthew Shepard was committed by opportunistic criminals looking for easy prey The murderers were aware of Shepard's proclivities and capitalized on them, just as they would have exploited any other vice that offered a similar opportunity (drug addiction, for instance).
Those charged with investigating and prosecuting the murder apparently didn't place much stock in the accounts offered by McKinney's father and ex-girlfriend. According to ...
