The talk of college basketball recently has been Indiana coach Mike Davis. After his tirade during the Kentucky game, I ran into one official who told me, in all his years, he's "never seen an outburst like that."
But what's most important is how Mike handled his postgame comments. He couldn't have been more apologetic and took full responsibility for his actions. As Mike said, "I got caught up in the moment and lost it." Haven't we all?
My worst moment came behind the scenes. I was coaching at Appalachian State, and we had a game at East Tennessee State. Our game officials got snowed in and couldn't get there. So we used local officials, and as you can imagine, saw some home calls down the stretch. After walking off the court, I found the officials' locker room and had some choice words for them. To my amazement, one official struck me and a brawl ensued. Fortunately for me, he struck first, and I was not suspended. I was strongly reprimanded and put on probation for the rest of the year.
Mike's final punishment, a one-game suspension, a public apology and a written apology, was the correct penalty. Any future outbursts could cost him severely.
