Dietary experts in the US should be aware of the numerous pitfalls and variables involved in setting upper levels or recommended dietary allowances for nutrients, warns US industry group the Council for Responsible Nutrition.
John Hathcock, the CRN's vice president, nutritional and regulatory affairs, was responding to a workshop on Dietary Reference Intakes and Discretionary Fortification held by the Food and Nutrition Board of the US Institute of Medicine. He argued that several aspects of the FNB's UL definition, and its method of calculating them, are open to misinterpretation.
