WHERE DO YOU LIVE? A simple enough question, but one that can evoke an outpouring of emotion, reminiscence, rationalization or, even, complaint. Everyone lives somewhere, of course, even the homeless, and everyone has attachments, one way or another, to where he or she lives. With these thoughts in mind, photographer Brian Atkinson met up with a cross-section of householders in and around Fredericton, New Brunswick's capital, a genteel government and university city and Atkinson's adopted home. He met a mix of people and heard a variety of reasons for why they love where they live, how they came to live there and how strongly they feel linked to the place they call home.

We all have to make choices about where to call home. Some decisions are dictated by economic factors or family considerations or political situations. Others are preferential, responding to a desire for privacy or security or functionality. The people Atkinson met and photographed all had singular reasons for living where they do: one was fleeing persecution; another was expanding artistic horizons; still another was seeking a co-operative lifestyle.
