North Korea announced its immediate withdrawal from the nuclear non-proliferation treaty but said it may reverse its decision if the United States agreed to resume oil supplies.

North Korea's latest act of brinkmanship came as senior regime officials held talks on its standoff with the US with a close ally of former American president Bill Clinton.

It also followed comments by South Korea president-elect Roh Moo-Hyun expressing confidence that the regime in the North would not "opt for suicide" by pushing its dispute with Washington over the edge.
